Some apps and websites can access and record the contents of your screen on your Mac. You can decide which apps and websites are allowed to record your screen. On your Mac, choose Apple menu System Preferences, click Security & Privacy, then click Privacy. While Quick Time Player on macOS can record contents of the screen, it cannot record internal audio of your Mac during screen recording. The default options that you get is to either record no.
If you have upgraded to macOS Catalina, you may experience an issue while trying to record prototype interactions in the desktop preview window. The recording button may blink and appear to record, but the timer is stuck at 00:00 and no .mov file is created when you stop the recording.
With Catalina (10.15), Apple has introduced a new security and privacy update for Mac. You must grant access to XD to record the contents of your screen.
To grant access to XD for screen recording, from the Apple menu, go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy, and click Privacy. Click Screen Recording from the left pane, and select Adobe XD.
How To Screen Record On Mac Os Catalina
If you are in XD, follow these steps to navigate to System Preferences:
The macOS Screen Recording dialog box may appear hidden behind the Preview window and your active XD document.
From Security & Privacy, select Privacy. To enable screen recording for XD, click Screen Recording from the left pane, and select Adobe XD.
In the Adobe XD will not be able to record the contents of your screen until it is quit dialog box that appears, click Quit Now.
Restart XD and open your prototype to start recording.
In October 2019, Apple released macOS Catalina, the latest version of the OS for Mac. The new OS is gradually being rolled out. If you own a Mac and have not yet upgraded to Catalina, you will be prompted to upgrade soon.
New permission for screen recording
Catalina introduces a change in security functionality that affects Outklip and other screen recording or screen sharing software. Because of the change, a user has to explicitly grant ‘screen recording’ permission to applications that record the screen, which is Google Chrome in Outklip’s case. The permission dialog shows up the first time you try to use Outklip or similar web apps within Google Chrome.
Mac Os Catalina Versions
If you grant Outklip permission for screen recording, you will be prompted to quit Chrome now. Make sure to save all your work in Chrome. Click Quit Now and restart Chrome. You are all set to make screen recordings with Outklip.
Changing screen recording permission
If you dismiss the permission dialog by clicking Later, you will not be able to make screen recordings. Now when you start a screen recording with Outklip, it will not actually record. Unfortunately, Google Chrome does not return an error to Outklip, it just silently fails.

macOS only shows the permission dialog the first time you try to make a screen recording from Chrome. Further permission changes have to be done manually, by carrying out the following steps:
- Enter ⌘-Space to bring up Spotlight and type System Preferences in the search bar
- On the System Preferences dialog, double click to open Security & Privacy.
- On the Security & Privacy dialog, select the Privacy option on the menu.
- Under Privacy, on the left panel, click Screen Recording. On the right panel, click the box next to Google Chrome. Note: Google Chrome appears on the right panel only if you have tried recording or sharing screen from Chrome after upgrading to Catalina.
- A prompt appears, asking you to quit Google Chrome. Make sure all your work in Google Chrome is saved. Click Quit now to close and restart Google Chrome.
By carrying out the above steps, you allow Google Chrome permission for screen recording. Now you can continue to use Outklip.

Known bug when screen recording with Chrome fullscreen
Note: The following bug is fixed in Chrome for macOS Version 79.0.3945.79 (Official Build) (64-bit). If you’re using an earlier version of Chrome, read on further about how to work around the bug.

Before you start screen recording, there is an issue you should be aware of: when Google Chrome is fullscreen, screen recordings will silently fail (recording timer will be stuck at 0:00). To work around the issue, exit fullscreen on Google Chrome before you make screen recordings with Outklip. It is not yet known whether the problem lies in Google Chrome or macOS Catalina. We will post updates on the issue as we find out more.
